Why More Choices Cause Less Cooperation in Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma

چکیده
Classic Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma (IPD) has only 2 choices, cooperate or defect. However, most real-world situations offer intermediate responses, between full cooperation and full defection. Previous studies observed that with intermediate levels, mutual cooperation is less likely to emerge, and even if it does it’s less stable. Exactly why has been a mystery. This paper demonstrates two mechanisms that sabotage the emergence of full mutual cooperation. First, to increase cooperation requires behavioral (phenotypic) diversity to explore different possible outcomes, and once evolution has converged somewhat on a particular degree of cooperation, it is unlikely to shift. Secondly, more choices allows a richer choice of stable strategies that are not simply cooperating with each other to exclude an invader, but which are symbiotic. Such non-symmetric and symbiotic players in the space of strategies act as roadblocks on the path to full cooperation.

Co-Evolution in Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma with Intermediate Levels of Cooperation: Application to Missile Defense
In a world torn by conflict, how can mutually beneficial cooperation can emerge spontaneously, with no higher authority than the rule of the jungle? History, economics, and especially biology provide many real-world examples of mutual cooperation without any enforcement from a higher authority. This cooperation occurs despite a bloodthirsty option offering more payoff to those might exploit the...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of N-Person Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma Games
The Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma game has been used extensively in the study of the evolution of cooperative behaviours in social and biological systems. There have been a lot of experimental studies on evolving strategies for 2-player Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma games (2IPD). However, there are many real world problems, especially many social and economic ones, which cannot be modelled by the 2...
متن کاملModeling alliance activity: Opportunity cost eVects and manipulations in an iterated prisoner’s dilemma with exit option
We model the two-Wrm alliance as an iterated prisoners’ dilemma game with an exit option and test several theoretical predictions over two experimental studies. A new major eVect on alliance performance arises by including the exit option (i.e., the option to end the alliance and receive a Wxed payoV that is less than the payoV for mutual cooperation but greater than the payoV for mutual defect...
متن کاملStudies on Dynamics in the Classical Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma with Few Strategies
In this paper we study Classical Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma (CIPD) dynamics of pure strategies in a discrete and determinist simulation context. We show that, in some very rare cases, they are not quiet and ordered. We propose a classification of ecological evolutions into categories which represent complex dynamics, such as oscillatory movements. We also show that those simulations are very s...
متن کاملAn Alternate Interpretation of the Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma and the Evolution of Non-Mutual Cooperation
The Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma (IPD) has been an effective model of social, biological and political interaction for nearly 40 years. In the traditional definition of the game, constraints are provided that limit the cooperation between players to mutual cooperation, i.e. both players deciding to “cooperate” on a single play. This paper demonstrates that by modifying the traditional constraint...
